Valuing Salt Marshes: The Importance of Linking Physical and Social Science Research

Peter Wiley, Economist, Coastal and Ocean Resource Economics Program, National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

Peter Wiley offered an overview of the steps that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is taking to incorporate social science into their funded physical science projects. He explained that social science – or the human impact aspect – has become a key component of NOAA’s work and that moving forward, all of NOAA’s work will incorporate a social science element. He discussed the mechanisms that NOAA has to evaluate and integrate social science into its work including a Science Advisory Board that includes a social science perspective and new initiatives and partnerships that link social science and physical science in NOAA projects. He added that NOAA has growing interest in the area of coastal blue carbon and has a coastal blue carbon leadership team that is exploring opportunities for NOAA involvement in the ecosystem services space in general and costal blue carbon in particular.
