NOAA’s Nature-Based Solutions for Coastal Hazards Training
Thursday, September 17th
9:00am-5:00pm
Overview – This course prepares coastal planners and managers for planning and implementing nature-based solutions to reduce coastal natural hazards in their communities.
The course consists of two parts:
Part 1: The Basics
- A 1-hour, self-guided online module covers foundational concepts prior to attending the in-person event.
Part 2: Developing a Strategy
- An in-person, one-day event allows participants to interact with their peers and local experts to develop a nature-based solutions strategy.
- We encourage participants to attend with a colleague or two (each must register individually) and come prepared with a project idea, challenge, or solution you would like to develop, refine, or brainstorm. You’re welcome to use the facilitated break-out time during the workshop to prepare a project for upcoming funding opportunities (e.g., Coastal Resiliency Grant Program, Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Program, Water Quality Grants).
Learn from our NOAA Trainers:
- Coastal Resilience Specialists Bridget Callahan Lussier and Anna Kaczmarek, Contractors for NOAA’s Office for Coastal Management
- Dani Boudreau, Northeast Learning Services Coordinator for NOAA Office for Coastal Management
Experts will bring nature-based solutions to life through local case studies:
- Alicia Stenstrom, Deputy Director, Installation Resilience Program, Office of War for Energy Resilience and Optimization
- Duke Bitsko, Technical Director, Wilkinson Ecological Design
- Tricia Bowie, Coastal Resiliency Specialist, MA Coastal Zone Management
Learning Outcomes
- Describe how nature-based solutions contribute to reducing the impacts of hazards and building resilience
- Analyze considerations for choosing and planning nature-based solutions, including hazard reduction benefits, co-benefits, design, maintenance, and cost
- Identify and assess approaches for successful implementation, including planning, funding, and engaging partners and stakeholders
- Identify local nature-based solutions and connect with local experts who can provide additional information and guidance
